Dixie State faculty to hold book sale fundraiser to benefit colleagues son

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State Colleges faculty are banding together to help raise money for a child one of their own colleagues with a special used book sale fundraiser to be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Bean Scene, located at 511 East St. George Blvd.

The fundraiser is being held in honor of Arizona Smith-Lahrman, the 10-year-old son of DSC sociology professor Dr. Matthew Smith-Lahrman, who received a life-saving liver transplant last March 31st. All monies raised through the book sale will go to the Arizona Smith-Lahrman account with the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) to help defray the costs of the transplant operation.

"Arizona is doing well since his liver transplant surgery," Professor Smith-Lahrman said. "He has shown no signs of rejection and started the fifth grade this year. As he gets further away from his surgery, and as his immunosuppression medicines are reduced, he will be less susceptible to common illnesses. Overall, Arizona's recovery thus far is going splendidly."

The public is invited to buy or even donate books to be sold at the fundraiser and may be dropped off at the McDonald Building located on the DSC campus. For more information or to drop off books for the sale, please contact DSC assistant professor of English Dr. Randy Jasmine at 435-652-7811, or administrative assistant Janeene Cowley at 435-652-7815.
