ST. GEORGE — On May 10 at Courtyard Marriott, Global Education Philanthropists (Global EP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, held its second annual gala.
International education and humanitarian service supporters gathered for a night focused on Global EP’s efforts, aptly titled the EmPOWER Gala. That night, demonstrating the organization’s impact included its review of “nearly 1000 students in Haiti and Dominican Republic that Global EP helped get into school. Global EP has provided teacher salaries in villages, school supplies and medical aid and education,” CEO Cammy Bowker said.
Highlights of the night included speakers, an auction, and comedy from master of ceremonies Ed Tracey. The charity raised over $35,000 to aid its future humanitarian projects, which are rapidly expanding. Among about 150 attendees, many local business owners attended the event to support the organization.
Utah State Legislator Travis Seegmiller made remarks on how legal philanthropy can protect future generations from human trafficking. He also discussed Global EP’s positive impact on lives around the world.
A human trafficking survivor spoke about her partnership with Global EP, which empowered over 150 domestic survivors to receive aftercare in 2018. Attendees were also interested to hear her personal account of being trafficked in the Dominican Republic and the United States and learned about opportunities to get involved in aftercare and education.
An executive from Skyline Solar, a Salt Lake City-based company which was the title sponsor of the night, spoke about how Global EP’s work aiding villagers motivated the company to provide solar energy to impoverished comm
unities. The company looks forward to a long relationship with Global EP to improve education and slow down the human trafficking cycle, the executive stated.
Global EP’s CEO Cammy Bowker spoke about Global EP’s projects and called for “educators, doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, builders, parents and youth” to join the charity for humanitarian work abroad.
“We look forward to many more humanitarian aid expeditions this coming year. Join us this summer as we head to the Dominican Republic and Belize. Our Haiti trip in June is full,” she said about the charity’s international work. She also expressed her gratitude to attendees and committee members supporting the organization’s global efforts.
Auction items that night included an Avenger’s: End Game autographed framed movie poster, a Larry Bird and Magic Johnson autographed framer poster, a Journey autographed record, an Eagles autographed guitar and getaways to various destinations.
For parents and families looking for a realistic way to help protect their family, Global EP announced a partnership with company The Cleaner Net, which provides filtering for all internet-enabled devices. The company is now offering a free dongle for home and business routers, available by emailing [email protected].
Internet filtering is critical in preventing human traffickers from grooming youth on social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, and YouTube.
