Hickman speaks on history of Frisco’s silver mining days

ST. GEORGE – Dr. Hal Hickman, author, playwright, actor, musician, educator, historian and lecturer will be the final presenter for the current display of cowboy and Western art at the St. George Art Museum.

On Saturday at 1 p.m. at the art museum located at 47 E. 200 North, Hickman will share his knowledge of Frisco – once one of the largest communities in Utah and where the Horn Silver Mine produced over $26 million in silver bullion. The mine was purchased in 1876 for $25,000, and three years later was sold to stockholders for $5 million. Frisco, according to Dr. Hickman, was a wild town from which many interesting stories can be told.

Dr. Hickman is an emeritus professor of Northern Arizona University’s School of Communications, where he taught Mass Communication courses for a period of more than 20 years. He is the former owner of local radio stations KONY-FM and KUNF-AM in St. George. He also writes a weekly column on the history of the old west for the Independent Senior Sampler.

Art Conversations at the St. George Art Museum are regularly scheduled adult gatherings of art lovers interested in more information about artists on display, collectors or topics relating to shows currently on display at the museum. Art conversations are free-of-charge.

The St. George Art Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 47 E. 200 North. According to the museum’s mission statement, the city-owned and operated facility exists “to educate … through quality exhibitions from all periods, cultures and media … and to collect, conserve, inventory, exhibit and interpret art and artifacts from Utah and the West.”
