ST. GEORGE — The driver of a semitractor-trailer escaped with minor injuries after a rollover Friday.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jesse Williams, the semi was southbound on state Route 130 when he began to turn around a corner “a little late.”

Williams said witnesses reported the driver was not speeding but took the turn a little too fast, which caused the semi’s right tires to drift into the dirt. That pulled the semi onto the shoulder, and the shoulder fell away causing the truck to turn onto its side.

The driver was extricated and taken to Cedar City Hospital with superficial cuts. Williams said the extrication was precautionary due to one door of the semi being pinched under the vehicle and the other door being 8-10 feet in the air.

“Thank God he was wearing his seat belt,” he said. “That prevented worse injury.”

Williams said he estimates to driver to be 75-80 years old. Traffic was affected for a few moments as officials turned the semi onto its wheels, he said.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
