ST. GEORGE — A steady snowstorm brought a fresh blanket of new powder to Brian Head and other high-elevation areas of Southern Utah over the weekend.
The snowfall started Saturday and continued with 10 inches through Sunday night, bringing the total to 20 inches of snowfall on Brian Head over the weekend. The snow in Brian Head is not likely to last, as the weather is predicted to rise back to the 40s by Friday, but the October snowfall was a welcome surprise for Brian Head residents like Ron Burgess, marketing director for Brian Head Resort.
“It’s always great to have an early snow, even if it’s going to warm up again,” Burgess said.
The ski resort isn’t planning on opening its slopes until Nov. 16, but the snow this weekend will give people an idea on what they can expect this season, Burgess said. Having snow fall in the beginning of October is “a little bit earlier than usual,” he said.
Accumulating snow is expected to continue Monday in areas of Southern Utah above 7,000-8,000 feet in elevation, according to a hazardous weather outlook by the National Weather Service.
According to traffic cameras from Utah Department of Transportation, some roads near Brian Head and Cedar Breaks National Monument were still covered in a thin layer of snow. Other areas, like the Pine Valley Mountain and Cedar Mountain also received snow over the weekend.

HA HA we were going to drive up and look at the fall colors as we had last weekend. The colors weren’t half done yet but this will put a damper on them for the year. It rained all day in Cedar, what a cold sloppy mess, they had some flash flooding here and there over the past days too, some muddy messes out and about.
