ST. GEORGE — Mel Brooks’ hilarious musical comedy “Young Frankenstein” has come to life at The Electric Theater. The show opened Sept. 13 and continues through Sept. 29.

Produced by The Stage Door, this is just one of many Southern Utah premieres the local nonprofit theater has brought to the area. It is also the second Mel Brooks’ comedy to hit their stage, the first being “The Producers” in 2017.

“Young Frankenstein” is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. The stage musical is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will be sure to leave you in stitches.

Performing in the role of Frederick Von Frankenstein is local actor, Jared Davis, with his side kick Igor played by DHS drama teacher and director Josh Scott. Cathy Ford serves double duty as the production’s musical director as well as the role of the stern housekeeper of the Frankenstein estate and former lover of Victor Frankenstein, Frau Blücher. Makayla Marie Nelson plays the role held by

Directing “Young Frankenstein” is professional actress and singer Heidi Anderson, known locally for her roles at Tuacahn Center for the Arts, including the roles of Ursula in “Little Mermaid,” Madame Thenardier in “Les Miserables” and Mother Abbess in “The Sound of Music.”

Besides being a professional actress, Anderson is also an accomplished director and not only lends those talents to the production but also serves as the wig and makeup designer for the show.

“Young Frankenstein” is now playing at the Electric Theater, 68 E. Tabernacle St. in St. George. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday through Sept. 29, with a matinee on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18.50-$21 and can be ordered online or by calling toll free to Showtix at 866-967-8167. Messages or special requests can also be left at 435-656-4407.
