ST. GEORGE — A teen was sent to the hospital Tuesday night after being hit by a car while he was skateboarding across Main Street in St. George.
St. George Police responded to the incident at approximately 9 p.m. at 1185 S. Main St.
The 14-year-old boy was with a group of friends when he attempted to cross Main Street from the Burger King toward the McDonalds on the west side of the street at the same time as a Chevrolet Impala was headed in his direction, St. George Police officer Tiffany Atkin said, noting that there is no crosswalk where the boy crossed.
“The driver didn’t have time to maneuver or stop before he hit the skateboarder,” Atkin said.
The boy was hit by the vehicle’s front passenger side, and the impact damaged the car’s windshield.
Medical personnel arrived on scene to tend to the boy, who suffered a possible compound fracture to his elbow and was bleeding from his face. He was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for further treatment.
The driver of the Impala told police it was dark at the time of the incident, and he didn’t see the boy before it was too late, Atkin said.
Atkin noted that the boy’s friends told the investigating officer they told him not to cross the road, but he did anyway.
No citation was issued to the driver, Atkin said, adding that the boy could face citation if police decide to submit a complaint request.

I feel bad for everyone involved. Hope the kid and the driver are both okay. If his friends were telling him not to cross, sounds like he has better friends than the girl who got shoved off the bridge, that’s for sure!
As a dude that started riding well for over 4 decades ago, and owns over 400 + skateboards, and can now qualify for senior discounts, two words of advice, as I still board at least once a year. You don’t skateboard downtown near Main street, you board in residential areas (Santa Clara is great for riding) or do tricks in skateboard parks if that’s your thing. 2nd, helmets are a good idea, (But honestly I’ve never worn one) but I never ride without wrist guards. When you get to your 30s, it is nice to be able to open pickle jars. You are lucky to be alive unlike the guy that bombed Snow Canyon. Hopefully this is a wake up call. Mine came when I was 9 years old and rolled on street pavement for almost 50′ and skinned up my body pretty bad. I remember the days when riding barefoot on steel and clay wheels ruled the day. And although it is supposedly not cool to ride with a helmet… until you learn truly learn how to fall off of a skateboard, riding without a helmet is not a good idea. A basic jujitsu class is a good idea. Good luck, keep riding, but ride smart.
