St. George Police responded to the crash involving a red Toyota Yaris and a maroon Hyundai Accent on Sunset Boulevard just east of where the road intersects with Westridge Drive.

St. George Police officer Ron Matik said the initial investigation into the collision indicates that the woman driving the Toyota rear ended the Hyundai, noting that the exact circumstances of the crash were still under investigation.

The woman was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance. The severity of her injuries were unknown to police at the time of this report.

The driver of the Hyundai corroborated the preliminary police investigation, telling St. George News that he was rear-ended by the Toyota as the cars were eastbound on Sunset Boulevard.

The driver of the Hyundai said he suffered minor injuries in the crash, including a hurt back.

At the time of this report, any citation was still pending until the investigating officer had a chance obtain the Toyota driver’s statement at the hospital.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the crash.

In the aftermath of the collision, the Hyundai ended up facing east in the westbound shoulder lane of Sunset Boulevard. The driver said he had just purchased the car two weeks before.

Traffic was light at the time of the crash and mostly unimpeded as emergency personnel from St. George Fire Department cleaned up the scene and wreckers removed the cars from the roadway.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Rearending somebody comes from distraction. As I drive on Sunset Blvd daily and can honestly say at minimum 1/3 rd of drivers in my proximity are on CELL phones especially when we get to a light and we are all waiting, I give a 50% this accident was caused by distracted driving. You don’t need to believe me, the next time you’re on Sunset simply look around. THE EMPEROR WEARS,NO CLOTHES. CHANGE THELAW!!!!!

I’d say it’s more like 100% but I’m not one to give people the benefit of the doubt. I’d give it a 90% chance that the woman was on her cell phone. Look at the damage the cars sustained. Darn near half of both cars are gone. My guess? She hit doing 40+ mph. I’m just glad that no one was more seriously injured.

It is true and I even saw a lady glance downwards as she was driving past me in a neighborhood where there are many young children. What’s more important lady? The kids safety or your mediocre text conversation! ?

Everyone is making assumptions here but you’re probably right. Utah’s cellphone laws are too complicated and obviously made by committee. How ’bout aligning our law with all the surrounding states? They are more strict and there will be less confusion.

If your involved in a accident with a distracted driver, subpoena their cell phone records and sue the heck out of them….give them more than their damn phones to worry about

I’m sure glad the driver of the Hyundai corroborated the preliminary police investigation. I mean, they probably wouldn’t have figured out what happened just by looking at the smashed “front” end of the Toyota into the smashed “rear” end of the Hyundai. Unless there’s evidence of the Hyundia backing up at 40mph into the Toyota. LOL
