ST. GEORGE — Sixteen baseball teams from five different states are playing this week as the four-day American Legion Summer Classic baseball tournament gets under way.
The tournament includes three days of pool play Wednesday through Friday, followed by seeded championship matchups on Saturday.
Three local American Legion squads — Dixie, Snow Canyon and the St. George Sentinels — will host pool games on their respective home fields. Players of high school age, including recent high school graduates not older than 19, are eligible to play American Legion baseball.
The tournament starts Wednesday evening with a pair of games at Dixie State University’s Bruce Hurst Field. Jackson, Wyoming, will face Grand Junction, Colorado, at 6 p.m., followed by the Nevada Jays against St. George at 8:30 p.m.
Thursday includes a full slate of 10 games, with a dozen more scheduled for Friday, as each team plays the other three teams in its pool once.
Saturday, the teams will be seeded and paired off according to how many games they won in pool play, with any ties being broken by head-to-head competition, then by runs allowed and runs scored. After each of the 16 teams plays once more on Saturday (eight games total), the two winners of the No. 1 seeded games will face each other in the tournament championship game at 8:30 p.m. at DSU.
Admission is $8 per day or $20 for the whole tournament.
Following is the schedule for the first three days of the tournament (local teams in bold). Home team for each game will be decided by a coin toss.
