Owned and operated by the LDS church, the FamilySearch Center is just one of a handful in operation. While it offers over 100 computers that family history researchers can use for genealogy work, there is an interactive and high-tech side to the facility as well called the Discovery Center.

Within the Discovery Center are many interactive touch displays where visitors are able to enter just a few pieces of information and learn if they’re related to someone famous and how far back that common tie is.

Someone could be related to a United States president or a famous inventor, or possibly even a notorious outlaw who rampaged through the Old West.

Visitors can also learn where their ancestors came from and may even get the opportunity to read their personal histories as they are shared through the Discovery Center.

Another part of the center includes recording studios where families can come and tell life stories that are recorded for posterity. There are also smaller, individual studios for those who want to share and record their own stories in a more private setting.

Free family history classes are also offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily.

While the primary purpose of the FamilySearch Center is to connect the generations to each other, it is also meant to stir new excitement in the pursuit of genealogy. It is also designed to appeal to today’s youth through its heavy use of interactive technologies.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The one-year anniversary is being observed Mondy thtough Friday, June 18-23.
