Letter to the Editor: What defines a Democrat?

OPINION — Just look at the diversity of groups that make up the Democratic Party: LGBT, BLM, NAACP, unions, intellectuals, socialists, feminists, Muslims, Hispanics , millennials, Hollywood and the commercial media (owned by Hollywood).

This array of groups has no ideology in common, no cohesive beliefs. They come together for political power to advance their unique but narrow agenda. The glue that holds them together is the need for votes.

The practice of subgroups uniting together is called identity politics. It requires no philosophical commonality. If you are black or gay or feminist you are a Democrat regardless of political beliefs. Do you think Muslims and feminists share any common beliefs? They just want the pulpit.

Consider the BLM movement, is this any different than the NAACP? Of course black (whatever that means) lives matter but no more than white lives. Should I support a person with black skin over a person with brown or white skin color? If a person with black skin is from India or Fiji, can I still support him or does he need to be of African descent?

Another group in this montage called Democrats is college intellectuals who rely on state legislatures for funding as do public school teachers. This dependence on public funding puts them at odds with fiscally conservative Republicans, they hop on the bandwagon for money.

Union leaders have preyed on American workers and abused their trust. They’ve needed political support and gotten it from the left to enact laws against the right to work. The states where they’ve prevailed are a mess of unfunded obligations and government borrowing.

So, all of these identity groups with a need for power but sharing no political ideology, unite to vote for clout in order to advance their separate interests.

These diverse parts of the Democratic Party seem to share one common thread, the practice of fiscal irresponsibility. Show me a state or municipality that is blue that is unencumbered by debt. The practice of buying votes for entitlements is expensive. Raising taxes is political suicide, this is the Democratic dilemma.

All this begs the question: Who leads the Democratic Party right now and where will they drive this bus of strange bedfellows? I’m waiting.

    Craig, thank you, I was a Democrat for many years until serving in the military, and there I learned that they (liberal democrats) stand against everything our forefathers were for, and they never support or fight for their country, only whine and complain about everything, and make every effort to destroy America, and yet they speak with Free Speech against America under the very constitution that they hope to get rid of. They want to abolish history, the constitution, moral integrity and are complete Hippocrates in every way!

    What a ridiculous premise. What do Democrats stand for? The anti-Reagan idea that we can accomplish great things together through government. Sure, there are many things that government should stay out of, but some great things are only possible through combined public effort. You call it buying votes. I call it funding the important roles that government has to fill.

    I could just as easily say that Republicans are buying your votes through tax cuts at the expense of vital programs and our deficit. (Ever notice how the deficit only matters when Democrats are in power? Remember when there was a budget surplus during the Clinton administration and conservatives successfully argued for a tax cut, saying it was wrong for the government to hold onto that money?)

    Democrats believe in the Constitution. Its preamble states: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” All of these things require government agencies to carry out. Many of the groups that you deride are striving for justice and at really no expense to you. When did conservatives become so fragile that they can’t bear the least degree of criticism? “Ooooh, someone is protesting peacefully during the anthem. They should lose their jobs.”

    You also seem to obliquely make the case that the Republican Party has a unifying theme. Maybe it’s less government, which would be great, except you are more than happy to step in to restrict rights when they disagree with your narrow religious beliefs. More and more, the real unifying theme is “liberal tears”. As Trump illustrates over and over, the deciding factor as to whether something is good or bad is, “Does it make liberals sad?” How pathetic.

    I guess I should give you credit for one thing. I’m impressed that you didn’t call it the “Democrat Party.” That’s a joke that never gets old.

      No, you do not follow the Constitution. The preamble is not the list of specific powers given to the federal government. It’s lied about to give the government unlimited powers.

        Ugh, you can support the principles of the Preamble while also understanding the enumerated powers of the rest of the Constitution. Democrats definitely believe in the Constitution as do most Americans. What we get to do is disagree on how best to apply and accommodate it in our government.

    The “practice of subgroups uniting together” isn’t called identity politics as the author states but is better labeled a coalition or coalition building. A coalition is defined as ”
    an alliance for combined action, especially a temporary alliance of political parties forming a government or of states”.

    Identity Politics had a specific meaning before pundits on the right started using it pejoratively. The current meaning, in its pejorative sense, is quite opposite of what the author states. It generally means “a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances, moving away from traditional broad-based party politics.”. Its not, in this sense, uniting without shared political belief, but actually dividing into subgroups, normally of protected classes as outlined in civil rights laws.

    But the historic use of the term digs deeper into the experiences of historically oppressed groups in this country. The concept grew out of the civil rights movement and truly started gaining traction when black women began politically organising in the 70s (as a rough outline of its history). The very criticisms of it today lend credence to its basic principles, ie how certain groups are consistently dehumanized and oppressed, by American society.

    Identity politics seems to be the core of the author’s argument so it seems fair to highlight how inaccurate their definition is.

    Virginia has historically ranked high, top 5, for fiscally conservative states while leaning blue consistently. So does New Hampshire.

    I am a proud Democrat because of people like Craig Davis.
    I am also glad that he signed his name becaus I was getting ready to pay for a consultation for a *very* expensive medical procedure — and one of the names on my list was a Dr Craig Davis, Washington City.
    I don’t know if this is the same person, but let’s just say that I am not going to take a chance. Can you imagine coming out looking as ugly as this man’s hateful thoughts?

    I would define a Democrat as a “Political Chameleon “. The have no standard or solid base in which to define their stance, they just change direction which ever way the wind blows that day or what makes them feel good together as a group. It’s the easiest of all positions to have politically. Just do what feels good that day or week regardless of legal presidence.

    My father has an anecdote he likes to tell, which some may have heard but which always bears repeating:

    Joe and Bob are two brothers who go to work for the summer in order to buy themselves cars for the next school year. Their father tells them that whatever they can save up, he will match it at the end of the summer.

    Joe works two jobs, missing out on a lot of activities and time with his friends. At the end of the summer, though, he’s saved up $5,000. Bob works only a part-time job, but has a great time hanging out and partying all summer. He manages to save up only $500.

    So Joe and Bob meet with their father, and lay all the money on the table. Their father keeps his word and matches the amounts.

    Bob says, “Gee Dad, Joe’s going to have a great car and I’m gonna have to drive a real beater! That doesn’t seem fair.”

    The father says, “You’re right Bob.” He redistributes the money and says, “So, instead of giving Joe his $10,000 and you your $1000, I’m going to give both of you $5,500 each. Then you’ll both be able to get decent cars.”

    Joe says, “But that’s not fair, Dad, I made a lot of sacrifices to save that money and Bob just partied all summer!”

    Then the father hugs his son Joe, redistributes the money according to the original deal and says, “Welcome to the Republican Party, son!”

    Of course these days Democrats are about more than just redistribution of wealth. They are also pushing a morality agenda that can best be defined, as it was recently in this very newspaper, as “totalitarian tolerance.”

    The kind of country the Democrats envision is essentially Sodom and Gomorrah on welfare.

    Fortunately, as evidenced by the last election, Americans aren’t as stupid as the Democratic Party’s “brain-trust” thinks we are.

      Republican Party loves socialism so long as it’s for the very wealthy. Want to play vegas casino with the banking system? It’s fine, if you lose the gov’t will bail you out. They also favor redistribution of wealth, so long as it’s redistributed from the middle class up into the pockets of corporatists and elitists that have used cunning and backroom deals to game the system and screw over the citizens in general. Globalism, corporate welfare, flooding in of illegals, etc etc are all results of Republican policy. I rarely defend the d-party bc of how low they’ve sunk. But you idiots thinking the r-party is so great or so different is pure foolishness.

          You didn’t read your own definition carefully enough, which was:

          The key terms are discrimination (the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.) OR prejudice (preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.) AGAINST people of other races. What you are describing is allowing race to be part of decision. Those are two different issues. Racism is an act or treatment of one race against another, ie KKK or some extremist in black nationalist movements. Recognizing someone of a specific race for achievement, like grants to minorities, doesn’t meet that definition as its not “against” another race and its based in actual experience.

          I think you are trying to hint at reverse racism, which doesn’t exist because it doesn’t align with the very definition of racism.

The Trump Family is the closest thing to Camelot as we have ever had.       For all his faults, at least Kennedy served his country honorably in the military, despite serious medical conditions that would have easily allowed him to stay home. When it was Trump’s turn to serve, he chickened out like a scared little girl, leaving thousands of poor, unconnected minorities to fight and to die in a war they had no stake in. Yeah, Trump is a real patriot.

      I get liking the guy. Not much can be said about voting for him, it was a personal choice. Could care less about the Camelot reference but we evaluate terms like “integrity”.

      Lets start with the definition: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

      We’ll dig into honesty and list just a handful of lies:

      ““A reporter for Time magazine — and I have been on their cover 14 or 15 times. I think we have the all-time record in the history of Time magazine.” Jan 21st: He’s been on it 11 times and Nixon had 55
      ” “We had 109 people out of hundreds of thousands of travelers and all we did was vet those people very, very carefully.” At least 60,000 people were directly affected by his travel ban
      ““We got 306 because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before so that’s the way it goes. I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan.” Three presidents between his win and Reagan’s, including Obama, all had bigger electoral college wins.
      “White nationalist protesters in Charlottesville “had a permit. The other group didn’t have a permit.” Counter protesters had a permit.

      Donald Trump is not honest and has countless documented lies beyond the scope of including in a place like this.

      Strong Moral Principles: Trump claims to be christian and specifically Presbyterian, so judging his “morality” based on the standards he voluntarily associates with seems fair:

      Trump has been married three times and divorced twice: “Anyone who divorces for reasons other than those permitted by Scripture and who marries again commits adultery.” Biblical reasons for divorce are only the sexual immorality of a spouse, which was not their reason.

      Trump said “I did try and f*** her. She was married.” Bible: “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.”

      Regarding morality in office he has condemned Sessions for recusing himself (the professionally ethical choice), called the Pope a “pawn” for critiquing his campaign to build a wall, etc.

      Patriotism: he condemned the family of a gold star soldier and claimed McCain was not a war hero and lambasted him for being captured. Just to name a few.

      Want me to go on?

          Mctrialsguy made positive statements about Trumps honesty, patriotism, strong valued and well mannered. I provided clear examples to the contrary. No human is Jesus so that is a moot point and the terms already take into the fact that we all flawed and have made mistakes. But Trump’s listed statements aren’t simple transgressions but consistent strategy and behavior he has exhibited for decades. Trump has always been an unscrupulous opportunist who games the system for his own benefit, including cloaking himself in the flag and religion.

          He is a self-proclaimed Presbyterian according to his own statements, ” I am a Presbyterian within the Protestant group and I go to Church as much as I can.” His dad was Lutheran but he grew up going to a Presbyterian church and then a “reform” church. But even Catholicism is clearly a Christian faith.

          Individuals as rich as Trump have little reason to be bribed with money. Seduced by the promise of power? That is a different story.

    Memo to Craig: While there are many blue states, such as Illinois, that are in dire financial condition as a direct result of over-promising benefits to state and municipal employees, including their teachers, you overlooked a huge exception: California. While in the days of the “Governator” things turned dire, thanks to your brilliant Republicans running our economy into a ditch, the Golden State has made a phenomenal recovery, and their general obligation debt is highly rated. Hard to believe that this has been accomplished by a state that features a super-majority of Democratic legislators.

    As often as folks here in White-topia continue to complain about California, the state has been financially successful. California’s economy, if accounted for independently, would rank it as the sixth largest economy in the world. This does not mean that folks can find affordable housing, nor has poverty been erased, but employment opportunities are plentiful……

    It was great to see the discussion surrounding your opinion. Everyone is entitled to one.

    So are we talking about Democrats today or are we talking about Democrats lets say forty years ago? They have a tendency to change with the times in order to suit their needs as a party. To be fair, the Republicans have a track record of doing the same thing. Lets go with this: There are two types of people in the US. 1. The politicians 2. The general public . The politicians job is to lie better then the rest of the politicians so that they can have a job. When they get elected their job is to blame everything on everyone else so they don’t have to do anything and can’t be blamed for making any bad decisions. The general public watches the politicians and makes excuses for them not doing anything because they feel responsible for hiring them and they are hoping they WILL some day do the job they were hired for. Every couple years the cycle repeats itself and the politicians lie and the public hopes. This is the US that we have come to except. If you don’t like it well lets change it.

      People get in to change the way things are done but once someone gets in they are ostracized and criticized and threatened if they stand against the other masses, and stand against the politicians-so the cycle continues. Plus, a lot of them have been in Washington for 40 years so if a person comes in new and fresh they are quickly shown the way things are done or hey can leave and if you don’t leave we will force you out. You know, it’s whats happening to trump. They hate trump because he’s trump and not because of his policies…In the end, nothing changes.

    Article is about Democratic identity. Comments turn to anti Trump RANT, then California. This confirms my previous definition is 100% accurate. Lastly if CA is doing so great and you love it so much, why not go live there? See all good, peace, love, and Donny Osmond. By the way is Donny a Democrat, and Marie a Republican, or is it vice versa? Trying to get back on topic. Sorry.

      Just a side note: If they decide to move back to California they better brush up on their Spanish or they will not be able to have a home built or order any fast food. Picking fruit is a thing of the past. They want a full share of what we have while contributing NOTHING to our society but crime and deficit to the welfare system.

    California is $300 billion in debt. Connecticut has a $5 billion shortfall this year alone and the same projected next year as well.

      You are correct, both the states I mentioned shifted noticeably in the years since the report I used. Thanks for clarifying and agree that particular statement of mine was flawed given new data.

      “we” as in the politically diverse citizenry of the US. No one party lays accurate claim to knowing and owning Constitutional loyalty.

      The Democratic party definitely has its own unfortunate history, that is true. I will have to fact-check the quote but it definitely has its own legacy of racism that shifted around the time of the Civil Rights Era. But, that is well established and documented history not current platform or values. And when you evaluate the demographics its clear there was s classic divide between the South’s Dixiecrats and the remainder of the nation’s democrat’s. That changed between the era of Strom Thurmond and Barry Goldwater who help moved those southern Dixiecrats into the modern day GOP. They didn’t like the DNC eventual support of Civil Rights legislation or ideals about integration.

      That is true history but its also equally true that the GOP is the current home of that voter and the remnants of that ideology. There is a reason David Duke openly votes GOP and supported Donald Trump.

    Republicans today have a more cohesive political ideology than the Democrats which are all over the spectrum. Just imagine AL Sharton sitting down with Kyllie Jenner and Gloria Steinem. All are Democrats but what would they talk about? Throw in a Muslim immigrant and watch the feminist bristle. A need for political power is their commonality. Is that enough?

    It’s this lack of principle and direction that has reduced the DNC to a protest based coalition. The theme for Democrats seems to be “oppose everything”.

        You are probably asking about Russia invading the democrat party. That is because so far what I have seen from the group is that they are doing exactly what they claim others are doing. What is happening to them, they claim is happening to others.

        Weren’t the Russians the ones that hacked into at least one DNC computer? Ahhhh yes. Yes they did.

        Socialism in the US is sleeping with communism. The left has gone so far that they are fighting for socialism. The socialism they fight for is extreme and crosses the line into communism.

        As we can see from the election that the numbers show a majority of the people want socialism, open boarders, more refugees, more welfare, and more government control. One way to control the people is to have a high amount of people on welfare. It looks like they are helping people-but they are not. It’s all about government control.

        You want more government control? Here, I’ll predict the future. People get so frustrated with the chip in their credit card. It’s suppose to be faster, more secure. Well, it is slower than molasses and it’s not secure. So what is going to happen? Well, chipping people. It’s already a trial run at a company. People volunteered to be chipped. Where does that lead? To the mark of the beast!

        Do not take the mark! Whether it is a chip, a tattoo, a bar code. Do not let this happen to you. People will be killed for not taking the mark. People will not be able to buy food without the mark. People will die for not taking the mark. There will be a false prophet that will fool many into thinking and believing that he comes to bring peace. He will perform “miracles” And many will follow that false prophet . And many will die for Jesus.

        I hope Jesus takes me before this.

          The word many is subjective. Many more (masses of) people will follow the false prophet and worship him (the anti-christ) than people that won’t (the minority).

          It’s too late once the mark is taken there’s no going back. Choose Jesus now and stand against the masses!

      What school of communism or state system did you study up on?

      The DNC made even the diluted version of Bernie Sanders democratic socialism clearly unwelcome. Not sure how any comparison to a state system of communism holds up to scrutiny.

          We don’t yet know how much influence they had on the election. The Mueller investigation will help us evaluate that claim. We do know twitter and Facebook bots favored pro-Trump propaganda over Hillary (those fake stories were largely anti-Hillary). Not sure how much you keep up with it but many accounts are still active. There most recent focus: amplifying the NFL protest.
