CEDAR CITY — The Dixie National Forest has begun improvements on several eroded and damaged forest roads and expects to complete the work by November.

Forest Service Roads within the project are FSR 076 and 510 at Red Creek Reservoir, FSR 050 at Clear Creek, FSR 081 at Bunker Creek, and FSR 261 and 1676 at Blue Springs.

The processing equipment has been moved on site. The first phase of project work will wrap up on Sept. 25. The second is expected to take place Oct. 2 through Nov. 1.

There will be no road closures, but heavy machinery and equipment will be present on the roads. During this time, the roads are expected to be rough, but passable by high-clearance vehicles.

The Forest Service road crew, Iron County Road Department and contractor crews will use specialized milling and crushing equipment to break existing material into a gravel surface four to six inches deep. The road will then be shaped with a road grader and compacted. The crushed material will create a surface similar to a crushed aggregate road base.

The work will help stabilize roads within the burn area of the Brian Head Fire and continue to provide access to forest users.

The project will result in occasional delays of up to an hour as roads will be blocked by windrowed material and equipment during processing.

Since the equipment being used has the potential to throw rock and rock shards long distances, the public is asked to stay well back of the actual work and only travel through the work zone once the crew has indicated that it is safe to pass. This will help ensure both public safety and that of the personnel working on the project.
