SAN JUAN COUNTY — A New York man has died in what has been determined to be a fall from a cliff in Dead Horse Point State Park.

The body of 24-year-old Michael Albu of College Point, New York, was discovered Tuesday by State Park rangers after Albu’s family notified them he had not contacted them, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. Albu was traveling alone. Rangers located Albu’s vehicle around 3 p.m. Tuesday and began a search.

The search was concentrated on the trails near the steep cliffs. Officials located Albu’s body just before dark, and estimated he fell 750 feet to his death. There were no witnesses to the fall.

Due to the rugged terrain, the San Juan County Search and Rescue Team was not able to retrieve his body Tuesday night.

The county SAR team, with rangers and Classic Air Medical out of Moab, were able to extricate Albu’s body just before noon Wednesday.

Albu’s family has been notified of his death.
