IVINS — An early warning and call to 911 by a neighbor brings a couple to safety and minimizes damage when smoke and flames are seen on the side of a residence in Ivins Monday afternoon.
Just after 3:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a home at 37 E. 675 South in Ivins after a neighbor, RoseAnn Hernandez, called 911 reporting smoke and flames coming from a side door located at the rear of the garage.
Meanwhile, the neighbor’s husband, Jesus Hernandez, ran across the street to alert the homeowners to the fire, RoseAnn Hernandez said.
Seeing one neighbor looking toward his house and another one running toward it, the homeowner, Doug Wiseman, came out from the rear of the residence and immediately saw flames coming from the rear garage side door.
“We had no idea there was a problem,” Wiseman said. “I grabbed a hose and started putting the fire out just as firefighters began to arrive.”
At the same time, Wiseman’s wife grabbed their two Shitzus who were sleeping inside and ran from the residence, Wiseman said.
Firefighters arrived and began dousing the exterior doorway and casing of the side door, Ivins City Fire and Rescue Chief Randy Hancey said, while other firefighters went through the garage and began breaking through insulation and drywall to completely extinguish the fire.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation at this time, Hancey said.
Damages were confined to the side/rear door area and interior garage, some of it from firefighters’ efforts to ensure the fire was completely extinguished, Wiseman said.
Ivins City Fire and Rescue, Ivins City EMS, and Santa Clara-Ivins police responded to the incident.
