VIRGIN RIVER GORGE – A four-vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 15 near the mouth of the Virgin River Gorge Sunday night has resulted in at least three people being transported to the hospital, as well as additional traffic delays.

The collision, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. MST on I-15 near Arizona milepost 11.5, is blocking the left lane of travel, Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Sgt. John Bottoms said around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Bottoms also confirmed at least three people were being transported to the hospital via ambulance as a result of the collision.

At 7:50 p.m., Bottoms reported all north- and southbound traffic backups were clear, but asked that motorists traveling through the area please slow down and use caution while passing the scene as multiple patrol vehicles, Arizona Department of Transportation and tow trucks are on scene to tend to the crash.

Lengthy holiday traffic backups were reported throughout the day Sunday along I-15 just north of Littlefield, Arizona, Bottoms said, adding 90-plus minutes to northbound motorists’ travel time.

While delays triggered by heavy holiday traffic are generally expected, the slowed travel near and through the Virgin River Gorge is compounded by ongoing construction and rehabilitation work on highway bridges running through the Gorge.

Motorists were advised to consider using Old Highway 91 as an alternate route to avoid the lengthy travel delays.

This is a developing story and may be updated as further details emerge.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.
