ST. GEORGE — In celebration of “Make a Difference Day” Saturday, a day designated for communities to make a difference in a single-day of volunteering, the Assistance League of Southern Utah provided books to Sandstone Elementary School and Red Mountain Elementary School in Washington County, both Title I schools.

Sandstone Elementary School received 720 books for special reading programs, benefiting approximately 350 students. Red Mountain Elementary School received 150 topic sets that provide practice in reading complex texts to deepen student’s knowledge of each topic, benefiting about 200 students in grades three to five.

“It is so rewarding to see how excited the children are to have new books,” a statement released by the Assistance League of Southern Utah said.

In 2012, the national Assistance League decided a local community book drive for children would be very beneficial.  Chapters throughout the United States collected 113,001 children’s books and donated them to schools, shelters, clubs and assistance league programs.

In 2013, 103,036 books were collected and donated and in 2014, 110 chapters participated in collecting 94,127 books.

In the past, the Assistance League of Southern Utah has donated new books to La Verkin and Hurricane elementary schools, Washington Elementary kindergarten summer reading program and has also donated books to Bloomington Elementary School for its dual immersion program.
