ST. GEORGE — When two teams play for more than 92 minutes without a goal finding the back of the net, things are going to get intense.

snow-canyon-logodixie-smAnd so they did at Warriors Stadium Tuesday night between Dixie and Snow Canyon. The outburst of emotion when a goal finally did go in was extreme as Mishayla Fausett bodied in a rebound shot for the Golden Goal and the Warriors survived a 1-0 double overtime squeaker.

“These overtime games, they can really get you,” said SC coach Kenny Kunde. “That was intense. I just kept telling the girls to be aggressive and keep attacking.”

Jenny Stewart, who had several brilliant corner kicks in the second half, only to see her teammates miss by inches, was fouled at about 25 yards out to the left side. Her free kick, which was about the same distance as a corner, sailed chest high into the goal box. Ashley Brindley deflected it and Fausett was able to bounce it in off her body.

“My hip, my shoulder, my leg, it kind of got all of them,” Fausett said. “It was a beautiful ball by Jenny and we just all crashed the box. It was an incredible feeling.”

The goal sparked a dogpile of celebration for the Warriors, who dominated the possession from halftime on. That made the job a little easier for Warriors keeper Mada Mooring, who had four saves and picked up her second shutout of the year.

“There is a lot of pressure when no one has scored,” she said. “The turf was wet, too, so I just was thinking about judging the ball and making sure I had good judgment.”

Dixie had a couple of breakaways in the second half and in the two overtimes, but Snow Canyon really kept the pressure on Dixie freshman goalie Mashaun Estridge, even hitting the crossbar after one particularly good Stewart corner. But the score stayed 0-0 until Fausett’s strike with 7:15 left in the second OT.

“Dixie’s goalie played great — just a freshman, too,” Kunde said. “Having Mada back there for us is big. She wasn’t sure if she was even going to play soccer this year because she’s really into basketball. When she showed up for tryouts, the confidence for our team just soared. She’s one of the best athletes in the school.”

Snow Canyon, 3-4-2 overall, but 2-1-0 in region play, slides into third place with the win, three points behind Cedar and Desert Hills. The Warriors are at Hurricane Thursday night.

Dixie, which fell to 2-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in region, hosts Pine View Thursday night.

Desert Hills 1, Pine View 0

Considering the wet weather and the soggy fields, it’s no surprise that teams struggled to score Tuesday night, with the only goal of the game coming with 21 minutes left in the second half in this one.

Desert-Hills-smPine-view-smBrooklyn Lott, who had a hat trick last Thursday and has scored 11 goals already this season in six games, found the net for the Thunder.

Meanwhile, Brittany Moore was keeping a clean slate at the other end for Desert Hills, recording her fifth shutout of the season.

The Thunder, now 5-3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0-0 in region play, are tied for first and will visit Cedar Thursday afternoon to break that tie.

Pine View, which fell to 4-2-2 overall and 1-2-0 in region, visits Dixie Thursday night.

Cedar 2, Hurricane 0

Megan Giddings picked up her sixth shutout of the season in goal for the Lady Reds, who improved to 7-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in Region 9.

cedar-smhurricane-smCedar, the defending 3A champ, picked up the road win by scoring one goal in each half. Julia Hunt broke the ice with a netfinder in the first half, her fifth goal of the season. Nicole Jenkins scored her 11th tally of the year with a goal in the second half. Jenkins has three hat tricks this year and is tied with DH’s Lott for second in the state in scoring.

Cedar will square off at 4 p.m. Thursday with D-Hills with first place on the line. Hurricane, which fell to 4-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in region, hosts Snow Canyon Thursday night.
