ST. GEORGE — One man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after he was struck by a car while riding a motorcycle near Dixie State University in St. George.
At around noon, a man was driving a motorcycle south on 1000 East next to the university, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said, when an adult woman driving a passenger car attempted to pull out of a parking lot near 300 South and turn left.
“The car actually hit the motorcycle,” Despain said, “kind of broadside.”
The motorcyclist, car and motorcycle were able to remove themselves from the road quite quickly, Depsain said, and the traffic impact was minimal. However, the St. George Fire Department was called to the scene to assist with cleanup.
The motorcyclist’s leg was injured and he was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, Despain said.
The woman driving the passenger car was issued a citation for failing to yield at a stop sign. The man driving the motorcycle will also be receiving a citation, Despain said, for not having a motorcycle endorsement allowing him to legally operate a motorcycle.
With school back in session for the fall semester, it’s a good idea for drivers to to be extra cautious, Despain said. This includes remembering to slow down in the area, and ensuring you are able to see other cars and pedestrians as well as people on bicycles and motorcycles.
“Around the college — or any school — there is a lot of traffic,” Despain said. “Just, you know, be extra vigilant and keep a look out, because around Dixie State it is busy, especially in the early morning hours and (during) class changes.”
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
