Truck pulling trailer of horses catches fire on I-15

WASHINGTON COUNTY – A pickup truck pulling a horse trailer and several horses caught fire while traveling on Interstate 15 Monday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol and other agencies were alerted to a vehicle fire on southbound I-15 near milepost 19, a couple miles south of the Leeds exit. A vehicle malfunction in the undercarriage of the pickup caused the fire, UHP Trooper Lars Gardner said.

The driver was able to pull the truck and trailer over to the side of the road and get his family and the horses safely away from the truck. A firetruck from the Leeds Area Fire Department was en route by that time. When it arrived, the truck’s former occupants had extinguished the fire on their own.

There were no injuries to the truck’s occupants or the horses, Gardner said.

Family out of nearby Leeds came to pick up the truck’s driver and the others, as well as the horses.

One family member said the problem with the truck had been a “transmission drop” that somehow sparked the fire.

There was no direct impact to southbound traffic at the time aside from drivers slowing to gawk.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
