CEDAR CITY — The Iron County Sheriff’s Office organized a search and rescue mission for a man in his 70s Wednesday night, when the man was reported missing after going out in search of his son.

Wednesday evening, the man’s son, who is in his 30s, was out hunting near Cedar City, and when he hadn’t come home by 9 p.m., his father became concerned and went in search of him on a four-wheeler, Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Del Schlosser said.

The son finally came back but his father didn’t, so the family began looking for him, starting near state Route 56 and Pinto Road.

Iron County Sheriff Search and Rescue was called in at about 11:25 p.m., a while into the family’s search. Rescuers searched for the man overnight, dispatching helicopters from Upper Limit Aviation at daybreak to assist in the search.

At about 7:25 a.m. Thursday, the man returned home unsure where exactly he had gone, but Schlosser said it sounded like he had been in the Milford area, based on his report once he returned.

Schlosser said the man has known medical issues, which contributed to the family’s concern when he didn’t return quickly and which could have been a factor in his getting lost.

But the man returned home in good health, Schlosser said, with no injuries or additional medical problems.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
