CEDAR CITY – Losses totaling approximately $10,000 were reported after a fire ravaged a 50-acre area in Cedar City Tuesday afternoon. Investigations into the fire revealed a rather odd cause behind the blaze.

“It appears at this time the fire was caused by a bird in the power line,” an Iron County Sheriff’s Office press release said.

At about 4:35 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched on reports of a large amount of smoke near 7700 W. Vandenberg Road. Deputies located the fire near 8100 W. 3400 South as it was approaching homes in the area.

Deputies began notifying homeowners about the fire. People started using garden hoses, shovels and other items to protect their houses and property, the press release said.

Fire responders from the Cedar City Fire Department, Bureau of Land Management Fire, U.S. Forest Service Fire and State Fire responded to the area, the press release said. Approximately nine fire apparatuses were on scene controlling the fire, containing it to approximately 50 acres.

The fire destroyed four power poles, a farm vehicle and a woodpile near a home.

“The estimated loss of the items is approximately $10,000,” the press release said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
