CEDAR CITY – A juvenile riding a bicycle was taken to the hospital Tuesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle on 200 North in Cedar City.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m.

A woman driving a PT Cruiser was stopped at a red light, preparing to turn right onto 200 North, Cedar City Police Cpl. Clint Pollock said.

A boy was riding a bicycle westbound on the sidewalk, on the south side of the road opposite to the flow of traffic. He left the sidewalk and entered the roadway, attempting to cross the road. The woman didn’t see him, proceeded to turn and struck him with her vehicle, Pollock said.

The boy was not wearing a helmet.

The boy was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Valley View Medical Center to be evaluated following the incident.

“He was complaining about a pain in his leg,” Pollock said.

Doctors later determined the boy’s left leg was fractured.

Bicycles, skateboards and other such conveyances are considered vehicles, Pollock said, and the boy was not following the rules of the road while riding his bike.

“I don’t find fault, but contributing circumstances of this crash is the young man was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk on the wrong side of the road and wasn’t following the vehicle rules of a bicyclist on the roadway,” Pollock said.

Pollock offered a caution to those operating bicycles in town:

“(Drive) your bicycle properly,” he said. “You’re considered a vehicle, so you’re supposed to be on the right-hand side of the traffic and not on the sidewalk. And be sure to wear a helmet.”

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I think we all should just take a minute here and realize how lucky we are all to have a guy like free parking living amongst us here in Southern Utah. His comments are thoughtful, intelligent, and his use of the English vocabulary is downright amazing. If Joseph Pulitzer was alive today, he would personally give him an award for his gifted commentary.

It wasn’t a kind thought but his vocabulary and grammar was fine. The only problem is he missed his period which is very common in Utah.
