Solar power: Take advantage of government incentives before 2016; STGnews Videocast

ST. GEORGE — Electricity powers our everyday lives — how we connect, how we learn and how we live. Technology is always evolving. Like telephones making the move from wired to wireless, electricity and power are moving in the same direction.

Solar power has the ability to replace the wired grid system that exists now. Homeowners will be able to own and harvest their own electricity, powered by the sun.

“Solar is a whole new way to think about electricity and power for your home,” Powerco Solar owner Kristi Holt said.

The government is offering incentives for anyone who buys and installs solar, but you have to act now — incentives are up for change in 2016.

Those who go solar may qualify for a 30 percent rebate off their overall cost when filing their federal taxes. In addition, the state of Utah is offering up to 25 percent, not to exceed $2,000, rebate.

“So if you’re considering solar, now is the time,” Holt said. “Powerco Solar will help you own your power. No more leasing or paying hiking utility rates to other companies. We’ll help you achieve ownership of your power.”

Owning your own power plant has its benefits.

Currently, battery backup systems are available, Holt said. Later this year, Tesla, along with other battery companies, plan to launch a battery that can store your extra solar power for use when you need it; this will enable users to go completely off the power grid.

“In five, 10, or 15 years what you pay today and what you lock in now will stay the same,” Holt said, “when everyone else who is still connected to the grid will be paying increasing costs.”

This is an ADVERT. Why is it even here?

Because there is no classified section. Just think, plunk down $5000 for solar panels and the connections and receive a 25 % deduction on your taxes. That’s a whopping $1250. But if too many do it, the power companies will have to raise their rates to offset the loss of revenue. Sorta like the greenie cars.

PV solar does not, in my estimation, pencil out right now. Give it a few more years though. I think we’re on the cusp of seeing it make a big impact.

It does pencil right now, but that may change for the worse. I have several friends that are net-metering and zero out their bills, and the payments on their solar arrays are the same as their electric bill (and their payment is fixed, while energy prices are going up). Their systems will be payed off in 9 – 12 years, then their electricity will essentially be free (with the current net-metering policies). However, the power companies and government are getting ready to change net-metering pricing, and then the ROI will go from 9 – 12 years to closer to 18 years. The systems last 25+, so there is still ROI, but a lot less. The best way is to go off-grid, if you can (it isn’t easy or cheap). But cities and counties are passing laws against that! So much for liberty. But if they can legally force you to do business with insurance companies (obamacare), they can legally obligate you to do business with power companies, too (and any other cronies that bribe them enough).

!!! so when obama comes to take all the guns he might take the solar panels as well?!
