DIAMOND VALLEY – Two men were injured Friday, one seriously, as a result of two single-car accidents in the same location just north of Diamond Valley on state Route 18.

The first accident was reported about 10:30 a.m. to the Utah Highway Patrol, Sgt. Danny Ferguson said. A hailstorm went through the area between mileposts 13 and 14, leaving one-quarter inch to one-half inch of ice and hail on the roadway.

A pickup truck, heading north, hit a patch of ice, causing it to veer off the road to the right and into a muddy field, Ferguson said. The truck then rolled.

The occupants of the truck managed to get out and into the field, Ferguson said, where they began to pick up their belongings that had been strewn over the mud. It was at this point, he said, that a Cadillac hit the same patch of ice and went off the road at the same place, hitting the truck.

One of the occupants of the truck was kneeling down in the field when the Cadillac struck him. Ferguson said he is unsure if the second man in the truck was struck by the Cadillac, but he was injured.

The man who was hit by the car was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with serious injuries, Ferguson said.

The second man from the truck was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

No injuries were reported by the husband and wife in the Cadillac.

Ferguson said the two factors that contributed to this accident were ice on the roadway and speed. Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene to help troopers.

No citations were issued pending the outcome of the investigation into the accident, Ferguson said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
