Man tries to coax 8-year-old girl into van; police seek public’s help

ST. GEORGE – The St. George Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who tried to coax a 8-year-old girl into a van Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. while the girl was playing in front of her home in the Tonaquint Terrace subdivision in St. George, according to a press statement issued by the St. George Police Department Wednesday afternoon.

The girl’s mother contacted police and reported that a white man with long white or gray hair and a beard, who was driving a van described as being gold in color with stripes, pulled in front of the girl’s residence.

“The driver of the van told the girl that she needed to get into the van and tried to give her excuses why,” police said in the statement. “The girl told the driver that she knew what he was saying wasn’t true and ran into the home.”

The St. George Police Investigations Division is investigating the incident, conducting follow-up interviews and pursuing leads. Further description of the suspect and vehicle will be provided when more information can be verified, the police statement said.

Authorities are asking the public to contact the St. George Police Department at 435-627-4300, referencing No. 15P010633, if they have any information that may help identify the man or vehicle involved in this case.

“If you live or were in the area of this incident and have any information that can help with the investigation please report the information,” police said in the statement. “Please consider that the subject or vehicle may have been in the area before, or after, this incident.”
