LDS Church announces Cedar City Temple groundbreaking

SOUTHERN UTAH — Two years after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced during its April 2013 general conference that a temple would be built in Cedar City, construction of the temple is now scheduled to begin.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Cedar City Utah Temple is scheduled to take place on Aug. 8, according to a press statement issued Monday by the church’s First Presidency.

The church also announced the official location of the temple: 300 S. Cove Drive in Cedar City.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be private, with attendance by invitation only, the statement said. However, the services will be transmitted via Internet to stake centers within the temple district.

After construction of the temple is completed, open house dates will be announced so the public can tour the temple before it is dedicated. A date for dedication will also be announced.

The groundbreaking will be the second for an LDS temple this year. Church officials broke ground on the Star Valley Wyoming Temple last month.

There are currently 173 temples throughout the world either in operation, under construction or announced, and five are being renovated, according to the church statement.
