FILLMORE — Bureau of Land Management West Desert District fire personnel will conduct a prescribed fire on 658 acres in the Valley Mountains this spring, weather and burning conditions permitting.
The Little Valley Prescribed Fire project area is located 8 miles southeast of Scipio. The project area is expected to take several days to complete. Smoke from this prescribed fire will be very visible to travelers on the Interstate 15 corridor. The BLM is coordinating with Utah Department of Transportation to post information signs.
In 2013, juniper and pinyon trees in the project area were cut, creating the wood piles that will be burned. This prescribed burn will reduce hazardous fuels near Scipio, help restore a fire-adaptive ecosystem, and improve wildlife habitat and rangeland conditions, the BLM stated in its notice.
The Little Valley Prescribed Fire project is one of several vegetation treatments planned within the larger 26,500-acre Valley Mountains project area. These planned projects will also reduce the threat of wildfire to adjacent private and state lands.
Before conducting a prescribed fire, the vegetation moisture content and area weather forecasts are closely monitored. If weather and vegetation conditions do not meet the required parameters, prescribed burning will be postponed. A comprehensive prescribed fire plan is developed in advance to meet project objectives and provide for firefighter and public safety.
