ST. GEORGE – An elderly woman was taken to the hospital just after noon Tuesday following a two-car collision triggered by a driver not stopping at a stop sign at the intersection of 600 South and 800 East in St. George.

A black Honda Accord, driven by a 76-year-old woman, was northbound on 800 East and approaching 600 South. At the same time, an 88-year-old woman driving a white Mercury Sable was westbound on 600 South, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.

The driver of the Accord didn’t stop at the stop sign posted on the corner of the intersection, Despain said, and  crashed into the Sable.

The resulting impact of the collision rendered both cars inoperable and both cars had to be towed from the scene.

The 88-year-old woman driving the Sable complained of neck and back pain and was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by Gold Cross Ambulance as a precaution, Despain said.

The driver of the Accord was uninjured and was issued a citation for not stopping at the stop sign, he said.

Responding agencies included St. George Police and Fire departments as well as Dixie State University Police.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by UHP at the scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.

It might be a good idea to paint the word “STOP” on the road at the stop signs. They do that in California and it seems to help avoid the “failure to yield” accidents that we hear about here in St. George all the time. The signs themselves are not always visible or can be obstructed easily.

Most neighborhoods in So. California have ‘ALTO’ painted on the road at the stop sign and a fake camera above the Stop sign. It does seem to work.
