ST. GEORGE – Two teens were sent to the hospital Friday night following a collision that partially blocked the roadway on Valley View Drive in St. George.

At about 8:20 p.m., the St. George Communications Center was alerted to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of 100 North and Valley View Drive.

Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene of the crash, St. George Police Sgt. Wade Johnson said, a silver passenger car was heading southbound in the outside lane on Valley View Drive when it collided with a truck traveling eastbound out of 100 North.

“(The truck) either stopped or failed to yield at the stop sign, came into the intersection and hit the car,” Johnson said.

The impact of the collision spun the silver car around, and it came to a stop facing north in the opposite travel lanes. The truck left the roadway and ended up on the curb in a planter.

Both northbound lanes and one southbound lane in that segment of Valley View Drive were shut down as police and other emergency responders attended to the scene.

St. George Fire Capt. Robert Hooper said three people were in the truck at the time of the crash. Two teen girls, ages 16 and 17, were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance. One of the teens had a head laceration while the other was taken in with injuries that were unknown at the time, he said. The truck’s third occupant was not injured. Neither Johnson nor Hooper could identify who had been the driver of the truck at the time of the accident.

The driver of the silver passenger car, a 28-year-old woman and the sole occupant of the vehicle, complained of hip pain at the scene but was not taken to DRMC by ambulance.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Blocked travel lanes were reopened by 9:15 p.m.

No citations had been issued as of 9:15 p.m., as officers were still gathering information about the incident.

“We’re looking at a violation at the stop sign, but I don’t know whether it’s a stop sign (violation) or a failure to yield. But if there is a failure to yield, if there has been a violation of the law that caused the wreck, we will address that,” Johnson said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

What is the difference between failure to yield and a Stop Sign violation? Just asking?

  • Doug January 10, 2015 at 8:47 am

Stop sign violation is when you don’t stop. Failure to yield is when you stop and then proceed when you shouldn’t because something is coming on the road your about to pull into ( could be a vehicle or bicycle, or even a pedestrian).

“(The truck) either stopped or failed to yield at the stop sign, came into the intersection and hit the car,” I think this should read, The truck either didn’t stop or failed to yield.

Failure to yield is the church penalty for women who don’t have kids. They are deemed unworthy of the celestial kolob kingdom

Did the police catch those kids who were tagging cars, signs, fences and other things with the swear words and phallic symbols? News was hushed if they were caught. Church kids?
