SALT LAKE CITY – Sen. Orrin Hatch will have the distinct honor of awarding the Silver Star, our nation’s third highest award exclusively for combat valor, to Jeff Roberts, son of World War I Corporal Jeremiah L. Roberts.
Corporal Roberts served in Company 1, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division of the American Expeditionary Forces as a runner in the Battle of Soissons, France during July 18-19, 1918.
After Corporal Roberts passed away, family members came across a copy of a United States Army Citation signed by John J. Pershing, Commander-In-Chief of the United States Army indicating that Corporal Roberts had earned a Silver Star.
The family had no evidence that their father had ever received the actual Silver Star and son Jeff Roberts contacted Sen. Hatch who went to work to get the military award for this deserving veteran and his family.
According to the United States Army Citation, Corporal Jeremiah Roberts was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action near Soissons, France, July 18-19, 1918, while acting as a runner.
His outstanding courage, strong initiative and aggressiveness in action against the enemy reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the American Expeditionary Forces.
