Orchestra of Southern Utah invites all to Handel’s ‘Messiah’

CEDAR CITY — Cedar City’s rooftops sparkle with frost and snow, it colorful mountains are trimmed in white, and the Orchestra of Southern Utah and Chorale are eager to ring in the Christmas season with their 74th performance of Handel’s “Messiah” on Dec. 14 and 15.

The doors open both evenings at 6:45 p.m. and the audience is asked to be seated by 7:15 p.m., at which time empty seats will be released to those waiting. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

This production is funded by the generous sponsorships of the State Bank of Southern Utah and the Leavitt Group, and performed with the volunteer service of the orchestra and choir. As a result, admission is free. Tickets are required and are available at no cost at the Heritage Center box office, 105 North 100 East in Cedar City during regular business hours.  Attendees are encouraged to collect their tickets in advance, as a full house is expected for both performances.

Composed in 1741, Handel’s “Messiah” continues to move countless audiences worldwide. This famous oratorio musically illustrates the amazing life of Christ, chronicling the significance of his birth, the pain of his death, and the joyous celebration of his resurrection. The piece climaxes into the world-famous “Hallelujah” chorus, as the entire audience customarily stands in reverent awe, and ultimately ends in a beautiful, intertwining melody of amens.

Under the masterful direction of Dr. Xun Sun and Adrianne Tawa, this musical epic will transcend time and explore the depths of human emotion. Vocal soloists this year include: Brooke Alldredge, Rimi Fletcher, Brandon Grayson, Jen Hinton, Leslie Perkins, Marlo Ihler, Sarah Stout, Jaclyn Thomas, and Glen Reber. The trumpet solo for “The Trumpet Will Sound” will be performed by Laura Bird.

Be sure to get a ticket for the amazing Christmas tradition that is Handel’s Messiah! The Orchestra of Southern Utah welcomes all children over the age of six with adult supervision, but requests that children younger than six and babies not attend as the concerts will be recorded.
