SALT LAKE CITY — The shift is small, but perceptible. Except for Canyon View fans, who might want to buy cars that get good gas mileage. They’re going to need it.
The Utah High School Activities Association announced the region and classification realignment for the 2015 through 2017 school years and there are a couple of changes that affect southern Utah teams.
First of all, in all sports except football, Canyon View will remain in 3A. But the Falcons have been moved out of Region 9 for the first time since the school opened in 2001. CV will compete in Region 12 beginning next season, where the Falcons will battle Carbon (Price), Juab (Nephi), North Sanpete (Mt. Pleasant) and Richfield. That’s a huge amount of added travel for the team located on the north end of Cedar City. The Falcons longest road trip in Region 9 was Snow Canyon.
That leaves Region 9 with six teams to compete in the bulk of sports and activities. Tuacahn is also a region member, but does not compete in sports. A total of 21 teams will compete for state titles in 3A in all sports except football. Additionally, Payson and Uintah will bump back up to 4A, while Logan will drop back down to 3A after spending the last few years at the 4A level.
In football, the 3AA South loses Payson to the 4A level and gets no replacement, meaning the six remaining teams will compete in a smaller region and classification. Interestingly, Judge Memorial will compete at the 4A level in all sports except football, where the Bulldogs will be 3AA and compete in the North Region, along with Bear River, Ben Lomond, Logan, Park City, Stansbury and Tooele. Judge’s primary rival, Juan Diego, leaves the 3AA and will compete in the 3A North.

“A public hearing was held on Wednesday, December 3, to receive feedback from districts and schools on the placement of member schools into regions. In addition to the hearing, the UHSAA Board of Trustees received numerous emails over the past few weeks regarding the realignment of member schools.
“The assignment of member schools into regions was adopted on December 4, by the Board of Trustees, allowing time for schools and regions to organize and schedule for the two-year alignment period. The first contests under the new alignment will take place the fall of 2015. The enrollment data upon which the alignment is based will be less than one year old. A two year, rather than four year, alignment period allows for adjustments more often as enrollments rise and fall at a number of schools. The UHSAA Board of Trustees retains the responsibility for alignment of all member schools.”

So Favero at Logan and Collosimo at Juan Diego are tired of not winning State championships for the past few years, so they had to move down a level to make it happen again. I call BS on that!

spot on……this is THE dumbest thing UHSAA HAS DONE TO DATE…moving logan and juan diego DOWN????….. they have botched so many things . its like ive always said, you put a guy in a position of power, and a bone inside the head moves, wiping out all cognitive thought. and how about moving canyon view clear to a north region, REALLY…..they are competitive in all sports except football…..how dumb can all this get, every year is just gets stranger and stranger.
How about Desert Hills with over 1300 students staying down and not going to 4A? They are bigger than some 4A schools. What a mess up that is.
