A-List: Fractured Prune

OPINION – Raise your hand if you love donuts.

Raise both hands if your mouth is officially watering already. I know I’m not the only one currently waving my arms in the air. I mean, let’s be real – this delicacy is love at first bite.

Especially when we’re talking cake donuts at Fractured Prune. Although this company was started back east in Ocean City, Maryland, in 1976 – St. George residents Woody and Karan Taylor were the first to bring this fabulous franchise to the west. They are the proud local owners of the St. George location that is operated by their son-in-law, Tracy Hill.

While donuts are currently the trendiest treat, Fractured Prune takes this food fad to the next level. Unlike your standard pastry shop, you won’t be selecting from an assortment of donuts displayed behind a wide glass window. Instead, you’ll choose from over a dozen unique glazes and toppings to create your very own made-to-order masterpiece that is freshly dipped right before your eyes.

Add 120 seconds to the process, and boom, happiness in a box awaits. And not to mention at the perfect temperature – literally melt-in-your-mouth warm. That changes everything, right?

Right. Even people who claim to dislike donuts won’t be able to justify not trying one. I mean, with glaze flavors like blueberry, marshmallow, mint, orange, and strawberry, (just to name a few), every tastebud in town will be able to find something satisfying.  Especially when they get to top it off with items like graham crackers, mini chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and rainbow sprinkles.

I know, I know. All these donut decisions may seem a little overwhelming. That’s why Fractured Prune offers specialty donut suggestions as well.  Just trust me when I say donuts are always better by the dozen. So order accordingly. Translation: You can’t go wrong ordering an assortment to sample with friends. Be sure to try a wide variety, and don’t feel bad when you end up going back for seconds. And thirds. Guilty.

The possibilities are endless, but I am determined to try them all. So far my favorites include caramel bliss (caramel glaze and mini chocolate chips), carnival (honey glaze and rainbow sprinkles), strawberry shortcake (strawberry glaze, graham crackers and powdered sugar), and french toast (maple glaze and cinnamon sugar).  Oh,and  banana cream pie and s’mores both deserve a very honorable mention as well.  Don’t be afraid to order outside the (donut) box – it’s actually highly encouraged and all part of the experience!

Also, since everyone is in frantic search of that perfect pumpkin pastry, I should probably let you know you’ll find it here. You have your choice between three seasonal selections: pumpkin spice, pumpkin pie. and pumpkin chocolate chip. Yum. Just yum.

This hot spot also offers a drive-thru service, which is brilliant. Now there’s no reason not to stop and grab a batch to go. After all, this guilty pleasure tastes great at any time of the day.

So what are you waiting for? You can finally have your cake donut and eat it too. Just don’t forget the milk.

Sorry. Can’t agree. Overpriced, oily, nasty aftertaste. Can’t believe they’re still in business.

“Add 120 seconds to the process, and boom, happiness in a box…” That explains all these kids. Quickies.

Except that’s how ring donuts are made – fried for 90 to 150 seconds depending on whether they are yeast-based or cake-batter dough. So yeah – that accurately explains the process.

Agreed. About as donut shop as a Build-a-Bear toystore. Ima keep taking my business to the Curtis Bakery!

  • Mandy October 30, 2014 at 5:58 pm

Except for mediocre grocery store donuts, this is the only donut store in the area. Why is that?

That’s the great thing about us humans in relation to the foods we eat. We all have different tastes and like different things. What’s good to one is nasty to another. Problem is, none of us have seem to have any tolerance for someone with an opposite taste. Good luck, Fractured Prune, may those who love your donuts flock to your business. And those who don’t love them, well, they can go somewhere else. Ain’t America great!

I checked into opening a donut franchise in St. George a couple years ago as I was amazed there was NO fresh donut shop in town and we missed them terribly when we moved here. Since I am also a coffee lover, I checked into a Dunkin Donuts franchise. NOW I will tell you why there is no donut shop in town…Dunkin requires $250,000 fluid cash on hand and a minimum of $500,000 net worth before they will even talk to you. Of course, then you can make your profit back 50 cents at a time while getting up before the crack of dawn to open the shop and sell your wares! Think I’d rather drive to Vegas for a donut! Actually I’ve tried Fractured Prune and they are very good, but I still miss the raised glazed donuts of Winchell’s on the west coast.

Winchells was the bomb back in the day. Still is if you can find one.

Dunkin Donuts…DROOOOOL!!!!!! Love love loved going there every chance i got growing up on the east coast and halloween was great too. You got a small box of donut holes for FREE!
Of course I love the old fashioned cake donuts too. Haven’t had a decent cake donut in over 30 years. Going to give fractured prune a try.

Curtis bakery good, most of gas stations in town carry Curtis doughnuts. Krave yogurt might be opening a doughnut shop soon.
