First-round playoff match-ups set for Friday evening

ST. GEORGE — The match-ups are set and the times have been released for the first round the of the 3AA playoffs.

Friday’s first-round games feature the No. 3 seeds hosting the No. 6 seeds and the No. 4 seeds hosting the No. 5 seeds. Here are the match-ups:

3AA First Round — Friday
Park City (2-8) at Hurricane (5-5), 4 p.m.
Uintah (4-6) at Dixie (6-4), 5 p.m.
Snow Canyon (4-6) at Bear River (4-6), 5 p.m.
Cedar (4-5) at Tooele (7-3), 7 p.m.

The No. 1s (Stansbury and Desert Hills) and the No. 2s (Juan Diego and Pine View) have first-round byes.

hurricane-smpark-city-smHurricane enters the playoffs as the 3AA South’s third seed, though the Tigers closed out the season with three straight losses. Hurricane fell to Pine View 29-14, to Logan 41-21 and to Desert Hills 21-3. Prior to the losing streak, Hurricane had won four straight. The Tigers host a Park City team that has won just two games. The Miners beat small school Preston, Idaho, in the preseason and defeated Ben Lomond in 3AA North play. The two teams have one common opponent. The Tigers beat Stansbury in Hurricane 28-7 back in late August. Park City visited Stansbury, losing 42-3 to the Stallions just 12 days ago.

dixie-smuintahDixie, the fourth seed from the 3AA South, night be the hottest team in the 3AA classification. The Flyers have won four straight, including a 17-16 upset of No. 1-ranked Desert Hills, the Thunder’s only loss. Dixie is ranked fourth in the Salt Lake media and has outscored its past three opponents (Payson, Cedar and Snow Canyon) by a combined 144-38 score. The Flyers host a Uintah team that has won four games. The Utes beat Ogden 37-21 and Layton Christian 28-21 in a pair of preseason wins and defeated Park City 34-17 and Ben Lomond 34-13 in 3AA North play. The two teams have no common opponents this season.

snow-canyon-smbear-river-smFifth-seeded Snow Canyon (4-6) visits a Bear River team that has won four games as well. The fourth-seeded Bears actually started the year 0-6 and have won four straight since that time. Bear River was 3-3 in the 3AA North, with wins over Park City 43-13, Ben Lomond 33-22 and Uintah 31-14. The Bears and Warriors have two common opponents. Snow Canyon beat Juan Diego in Draper 34-28 in double overtime and defeated Payson 16-6 in St. George. Bear River 32-7 at Juan Diego and beat Payson at home in overtime 17-10.

cedar-smtoole-smCedar ended up as the sixth seed from the 3AA South and will travel to Tooele to take on the third seeded Buffaloes. The Redmen started the season 3-0, then lost five straight before grabbing the last playoff spot with a win last week vs. Payson. The Buffaloes had a similar experience, starting the year 5-0, then losing three straight. Tooele closed out the year with two wins to clinch the No. 3-seed. The Buffs went 4-2 in the 3AA North, losing to both Stansbury (42-21) and Juan Diego (39-31 in triple OT). Cedar and Tooele have three common opponents. The Redmen beat Grantsville 20-16, beat Canyon View 56-19 and lost to Desert Hills 45-7. The Buffaloes beat Grantsville 21-0, defeated Canyon View 52-35 and lost to Desert Hills 48-14.

    Why don’t you cover Enterprise High School Sports and the schools they compete with?

      Thanks for the inquiry. Truth be told, we don’t have the manpower or the demand for coverage of Enterprise sports. Some of that could be remedied with submissions from Enterprise to us at [email protected].

    Those girls have their shoulders bared. Someone had better notify their bishops! Now! Call the police code and policy enforcement unit, too! This has to be illegal! Remember not long ago how some Utah school nazis edited students’ school photos because they showed too much skin?
