SPRINGDALE — Springdale Elementary will present “The Six Technology Tools Everyone Should Be Using” on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. taught by Derek Larsen, as part of the school’s “Open Arms Alliance,” a program it is organizing to offer opportunities for the public to come into the school and take advantage of educational programs and events that will benefit the community in addition to the needs of students of all ages and their parents.
Previously, on Sept. 22, the students presented the “Leader In Me Program” to their parents and interested community members.
Whether you are a techie person or a techno-novice, there are a number of online tools available to help increase productivity and perfect your computer skills. “The Six Technology Tools Everyone Should Be Using” on Oct. 27 will cover five main technology areas: storage solutions, password management, bookmarking, information gathering, and information sharing. Each of the five areas will include multiple options to help allow for both flexibility of choice and availability of assortment.
The different areas contain multiple tools, including: online flash drives, applications to help you remember your different passwords, the ability to save internet bookmarks to multiple web browsers and computers, sharing bookmarks with others, RSS feeds, blogs, wikis, Twitter and URL shorteners.
Each of the areas will contain both free and paid versions of tools allowing everyone the opportunity to use the products regardless of finances.
Larsen is a fourth grade teacher in Southern Utah and also serves as a member of the SUECON Utah Committee and the UCET Board. He was awarded the 2014 UCET Outstanding Young Educator of the Year, an award presented during the first 10 years of of the recipient’s teaching career. The award goes to those who demonstrate vision, innovation, action and transformation using technology to improve teaching and learning.
Larsen is also a moderator for #UTedChat, an educational Twitter chat focused on Utah educators. The chat begins every Wednesday at 9 p.m. and non-Utahns and noneducators are also welcome to participate.
Larsen said he thinks technology is one of the most crucial aspects of teaching now. The students are excited by it and look forward to it. If teachers can find ways to harness technology in their classrooms, they will be better able to reach students and help them to catch the excitement of education and learning.
If this class is well attended, the “Open Arms Alliance” will offer monthly technology classes specific to the community’s needs and interests. Activities will be provided for students and other family members attending with their parents or grandparents. Do not miss this unique opportunity.
