ST. GEORGE – On Tuesday under a bright, sunny sky, local dignitaries, members of the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce and Dixie Sunshiners and staff of The Retreat at Sunbrook, a new assisted living facility to be located at 359 North Dixie Drive, officially broke ground on the $6 million dollar project that will provide independent and assisted living apartments as well as secure memory care units on the west side of St. George.

The Sunbrook building is a partner facility to The Retreat at SunRiver St. George which is located in the adult active community south of Bloomington; but the Sunbrook building will be twice the size, Doug Watts of Watts Construction, contractor for the project said.

The Retreat at Sunbrook will be a state-of-the-art facility with 64 apartments, 50 of which will be dedicated for independent and assisted living and 14 memory care units for those suffering from memory loss, particularly Alzheimer’s, Sun-Belt Properties’ David Gardner said.

Sun-Belt Properties represents the ownership of the project, Gardner said, a project that began two years ago in 2012 when they secured the land for the facility and that will continue through the construction and opening of the new care center.

All apartments in The Retreat at Sunbrook will be equipped with high ceilings, Wi-Fi, washer and dryer hookups, walk-in closests, private patios and more.

“We will have amenities both in the apartments and in the building that you don’t normally see in a facility of this type,” Gardner said.

Building amenities will include, a billiards table, putting green, spa and salon, library, game room and many other options for both care and entertainment.

St. George Chamber of Commerce President, Gregg McArthur, emceed the event.

“The Chamber of Commerce gets quite involved in groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings and we are happy to be a part of it,” McArthur said, “There are a lot of retired people in this community and to have this type of facility for people later on in life is a great thing.”

St. George Mayor Jon Pike spoke at the groundbreaking and paid verbal tribute to the generations that came before him, praising the facility for its ability to house and care for the people we love.

“I love the concept of this facility,” Pike said, “it is a place for those we love and honor to live with dignity.”

The construction of the project is underway and should last 9-10 months, Watts said.

The Retreat at Sunbrook plans to be open in Summer of 2015 and is now taking reservations.

How many old people do you see involved with this? Any old people volunteers working on this project?
