ST. GEORGE – At approximately 10 p.m. Friday, a large sinkhole opened up in the area of Sunset Boulevard between Valley View Drive and Bluff Street.
The sinkhole opened on the sidewalk after a fuel tanker attempted to leave the Texaco fueling station at the intersection of Valley View Drive and Sunset Boulevard, St. George Police Sgt. Dave Williams said.
The tanker’s tire got stuck in the sinkhole which is estimated to be 10 feet deep and around 20 feet wide, and partially extends under Sunset Boulevard from the sidewalk, Williams said.
The driver involved in the incident was unharmed.
St. George Police and St. George Fire Department are on scene as well as the Utah Department of Transportation and staff from the City of St. George Public Works department.
The fire department is monitoring the fuel tanker, Williams said, but things seem to be OK at this time.
The outside eastbound lane of Sunset Boulevard has been closed and may remain that way all night, Williams said.
The cause of the sinkhole is unknown but there do not appear to be any compromised water lines at this time, Williams said.

A few years back (St George) I was investigating a leak in front of our building. It was near the fire hydrant and water meters. As I approached the area the ground gave way and I was chest high in water. There was a 14′ X 14′ X 5′ sink hole there and then I was clinging to the side of the hole. I must say it was rather surprising. I was glad I was the one who fell in and not a small child……could have had some very fatal results.
