ST. GEORGE—Learn about oil pollution and how it affects the ocean at Dixie State University’s Dixie Forum: A Window on the World Tuesday. Dr. John Farrington, dean emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will speak at noon in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus on the topic: “Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill (2010) in the Gulf of Mexico: A Reminder About Oil Pollution in the Ocean.” All are welcome and there is no charge for the forum.
Among his professional interests, Farrington, who has written more than 100 publications and more than 50 reports, has studied organic geochemistry of the marine environment, biochemistry of marine organisms and the interaction between science and policy as well as that between science and religion. Farrington earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from Southeastern Massachusetts University and a doctorate in oceanography from the University of Rhode Island.
Dixie Forum is designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Dixie State students can earn one college credit by signing up for HUM 1000, attending lectures regularly, carefully considering the ideas expressed and writing about the presentations.
The weekly series will continue its 2014 fall semester slate at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with Julie Rogers offering a lecture on fine art painting. This forum will be in DSU’s Art Building and may run until 1:50 p.m.
