WASHINGTON COUNTY – The Department of the Interior has issued payments to eligible local governments under the Payments in Lieu of Taxes, or PILT, program. The PILT program compensates local jurisdictions for federal lands administered by agencies within the Department and on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The PILT payments may be used for any governmental purpose. Washington County will receive $2,913,284 in funding this year. More than $2,400,000 has been budgeted for the Sheriff’s Office with another $300,000 slated for maintenance of county roads.
The Department of Interior’s Fiscal Year 2015 budget proposes a one-year extension of the current full-funding authorization of the PILT program. Approximately 1,900 local jurisdictions received a total of $436.9 million in PILT payments this year.
Washington County would like to thank the members of Utah’s congressional delegation who voted to support the PILT program.

Dean cox and county commissioners, the Tea Party demands you not accept this filthy federal lucre. Please mail it back to DC and then warsh your hands.
I agree completely. There is no such thing as free money. The strings attached to this money are strong enough to reel in the moon. This is no different than the mafia (feds) paying the cops to look the other way.
That’s the spirit Brian. Dean, Brian’s game for an increase in his property taxes to make up the difference. He, his wife and his three kids will gladly pony up an extra $20 each ($3M/150k population = $20/person). Send the $100 bill to Brian the Tea Party Loon.
Bender, if you actually got informed on PILT funds (and “federal” lands in the west in general) and understood the trail of the money you may view things differently. Here is a good place to start: http://mesquitelocalnews.com/2014/06/pilt-funding-still-doesnt-add/. If your opinion doesn’t change, I’ll gladly take $14,000 from you and give you $3 in return, which is just what is happening to Utah and Nevada as far as federal lands revenue goes (same ratio). Just remember to thank me for the $3, or I may accuse you of wanting to pay more taxes…
drill it, mine it, log it. git-r-done b’fore Jesus comes back.
Gotcha Brian bud. Your source for hard information on PILT and federal land issues in the West is a columnist in an alternative Mesquite newspaper. If that’s the quality of ammo you’re packing I’ll just fire back with a single Ed Kociela. I think I won.
If that were the case, Utah should send back the 40% of federal money taken every year to fund the state budget. All this political hype is hilarious at best.
Thank them for getting money back for land that should be ours? Well OK,I guess that is the PC think to do.
What do you mean ours? You don’t know that the land already belongs to you and every other American? Do you mean you want to own it personally? Or maybe you think just you and a bunch of your friends should own it. You think perhaps that the current ownership by all Americans should change so that a smaller group of owners gets ownership, at no cost.
.
Sounds like you are a socialist.
