At about 5:45 p.m., a group of motorcyclists were traveling on state Route 148 near mile post 7, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jacob Cox  said in a statement Saturday. There was a patch of gravel in the roadway and the riders swerved to avoid the debris. The last motorcycle went off the road on the left side and into the field.

A husband and wife, from Sioux City, Arizona, were both riding the motorcycle and were ejected.

The rider, Daniel Shoop, 62, suffered chest and back injuries and was transported by helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. The passenger, Alice Shoop, 61, was transported by ground ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City with minor injuries.

Both riders were wearing helmets, which likely prevented serious head injury, Cox said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.

The authorities have a HIPAA violation on their hands by releasing the names and medical conditions of the parties involved. You can release their names, but not their conditions, or vice versa, but not both.
