Hatch names new Chief of Staff, Senior Legislative Staff

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch announced Thursday that Rob Porter has been named his new Chief of Staff. Porter will replace Michael Kennedy, who had served as Hatch’s Chief of Staff since November of 2010, and is leaving for an opportunity in the private sector. Hatch also announced that John Tanner has been promoted from Legislative Policy Advisor to Deputy Legislative Director under Jay Khosla, Legislative Director.

Hatch said:

Michael has been a steadfast and trusted leader of my team, and it’s been a wonderful experience having him by my side through the battles we’ve faced for nearly four years. Michael is leaving some pretty big shoes to fill, and I’m confident Rob will fill them as my new Chief of Staff. Rob has been a great addition to our team since he joined the office earlier this year. His background in the Senate, educational achievements, and close Utah ties will help me continue serving the Beehive State and the nation.

Kennedy said:

It has been an honor of a lifetime to work with Senator Hatch, and to be by his side as he works for the people of Utah and this country. I will miss the Senator, his unparalleled staff, and my Capitol Hill colleagues, and I will miss working so closely with so many great people from my home in Utah.

Porter said:

I am honored to continue serving Senator Hatch and working on behalf of Utah, especially at this important time for our nation. Senator Hatch is a proven leader in the United States Senate and I look forward to helping him in the critical policy debates and legislative work ahead.

Prior to joining the Hatch office, Porter served as general counsel to Sen. Rob Portman, where he worked on tax policy and regulatory reform, as a policy advisor on the Romney Readiness Project pre-election transition team, and as chief counsel to Sen. Mike Lee on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Before coming to Capitol Hill, he was an attorney at the law firm of Sidley Austin, a visiting scholar at Brigham Young University, and a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Porter is a graduate of Harvard College, Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, and Harvard Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.
