Find Summit Rock, win $5,000 or $10,000

ST. GEORGE – There is a rock hidden in Washington County that could be worth $5,000 or $10,000 to some lucky person or persons. No, it’s not made of gold. It’s the Summit Rock.

Joe Levine, owner of Summit Athletic Club, has partnered with Canyon Media to give out the daily clues for those interested in hunting down the rock. Radio station Planet 94.1 will give the clues every weekday at 8:15 a.m. until the rock is found. 99.9 KONY Country, 95.9 The Hawk, Fox News 1450 and 101.5 Greatest Hits will repeat the daily clue at 8:30 a.m. each weekday.

Clues will also be posted by the tennis courts at Summit Athletic Club daily at 8:15 a.m. A running list of all of the clues will also be shown.

Joe Levine thought of the idea after reminiscing with his wife, Shelli, over a similar event that took place in his hometown. Jingle Bell Rock was sponsored by a local radio station at Christmas time.

“I was just a kid but I remember how exciting it was,” Joe Levine said. “The money is nice, but more than anything it’s about making a memory.”

This is the second year that Joe Levine is sponsoring the hunt for Summit Rock. Last year Shawn Jaca won the $5,000 prize.

It was fun to listen for the clues that were more like riddles,” Jaca said.

Jaca was already a member of Summit Athletic Club, but hunting for the rock helped him to become more committed to a healthy life style.

“They have folks (at Summit) to help you stay motivated, and the classes they offer are awesome,” Jaca said.

Joe Levine agrees. “Summit is different,” he said. “We are not just a gym. It’s a place where people make friends.”

Jaca has continued to work out at Summit and has lost 53 pounds to date since he found the rock.

Greg Peck and his wife were in the vicinity when Jaca found the rock.

“My wife was talking to me on the cell phone over by (Jaca). I was on the other side of the water. We both heard him yell,” Peck said. “It was exciting to just be there. For me, it was closure. I just wanted to be there to see the end of the contest.”

The new hunt for the rock started Tuesday. Members of Summit Athletic Club can qualify to win the $10,000 grand prize. Nonmembers are eligible for $5,000.

If you missed this morning’s clue, here it is:

Welcome to the Summit Rock first clue. This can be seen once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a day. Good luck to you. You are on your way.

Though there was no way to track just how many people participated in last year’s hunt, it’s estimated that several thousand took part. Levine spoke with many of them over the course of the event.

“There were moms with kids on their backs looking for the rock,” Joe Levine said. They told him they wanted to take their kids to Disneyland. For many, it was a family affair. After the rock was found, one dad told Levine he didn’t want to break the news to his kids.

This is Joe Levine’s goal: “It’s all about getting healthy, getting out and getting fresh air.”

Jaca enjoyed the community interaction and how hunting for the Summit Rock brought people together. There were several people looking in the area where he found the rock.

“When it was actually found it brought the community together,” Jaca said.

Planet 94.1 has the rules listed on its website. Eligible contestants:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • When the rock is found please call 435-628-5000 immediately to claim your prize
  • Immediately after finding the rock you must call from the location where you’ve found the rock. Leaving the location with the rock may get you disqualified
  • To be eligible for the $10,000 prize, the winner must have been a member of Summit Athletic Club for at least 24 hours before finding the rock

Jaca is not eligible to claim the Summit Rock prize money this year. But he has some advice for everyone who is looking, he said: “When you are out there, turn things over and dig through the bushes.”

There’s a rock out there somewhere that’s going to make someone thousands of dollars richer. Wouldn’t you like that someone to be you?
