WASHINGTON CITY – Cotton Days, a two-week celebration of the history of Washington City, begins April 25 and continues through May 9, with a total of 16 events that take place throughout the weeks. All members of the community are invited to attend.
The event takes place annually to recognize the foundation of Washington, while creating new memories to bring the city and community together.
The desert clean up event, during which volunteers partner with city staff to clean up Washington, will kick-off the festival Friday at 8 a.m.
Saturday morning is the big kick-off for the two-week event, starting with the annual Cotton Days 5K (registrations due April 24). Last year, 82 people participated in the 5K, which was dedicated to those who ran in the Boston Marathon and those who lost their lives.
A Lions Club breakfast, prepared by the Washington Utah Lions Club, will take place after the 5K and before the “Feels Like Home” Cotton Days parade that will begin on Telegraph Street at 9 a.m.
Other events throughout the two weeks include the Washington City Community Center Anniversary Party, a junior rodeo (entries due by April 25), a “Dusk ’til Dawn” co-ed softball tournament (registration due by April 27), a fishing derby and a golf tournament. “WHERE DIXIE BEGINS” Hold on just one sec! I don’t remeber General Sherman marching through Washington City and burnning it to the ground. Oh wait! That was both of my home towns…right smack in the middle of where Dixie REALLY began! Atlanta and Marietta, Georgia! GO FALCONS!!! DSGB! Gosh, don’t even get me started on the REAL reason why we even have Cotton Days. To me its just a toned down KKK rally. All you need is the hoods. yes I admit it. I am a racist.

My Wife is AWESOME! If somebody can tell me the location of a Whaffel House in Southern Utah then I think we can officially consider this “Dixie.” Other than my Mothers house…I would like to know where I can get some collard greens,grits and some chitlins, sure on the same plate. Ok, so some folks round here can brew some hooch, I will give ya that! Do I even have to mention sweet tea…this ain’t the SOUF! People barely sit out on thier front porch out here. I was born in Dixie, so you will find me on my porch everyday of the week. My point I guess is this place should not be called “Dixie.” Not because of the racial undertones. Other reasons. There are way to many. I vote the Confedrate flag should fly at Dixie Univ. Own it! It did not offend my family. My family makes up 95% of the black population. Its our State Flag. GO FALCONS!
