News Short: Cyclist hit by truck, man taken to hospital

CEDAR CITY – A bicyclist was taken to the hospital after being hit by a truck Tuesday afternoon near Cedar City.

The accident occurred on state Route 56 around mile post 17.  The side view mirror of a Ford F-250 struck the bicyclist, sending him to the ground, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said. The cyclist was transported by ambulance to the Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident was reported at 12:14 p.m., Tuesday.  High winds and dust resulted in poor visibility which led to the collision, Royce said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.

It’s unfortunate that we have to learn the hard way that narrow 2 lane rural highways and cyclists don’t mix.

Neither do morons who drive 60 mph thru a dust storm with 0% visibility…

It’s unfortunate that we have to learn the hard way the basic principles that ALL DRIVERS of motor vehicles were taught prior to receiving a license:

Utah: “An operator of a motor vehicle may not knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly operate a motor vehicle within three feet of a moving bicycle, unless the operator of the motor vehicle operates the motor vehicle within a reasonable and safe distance of the bicycle.” Enacted 2006

There will always be cyclists on the road whether pedaling or operated by motor… the law is upheld the same. I know every driver sees the signs that say “buckle-up”, so why is it so hard to comprehend the signs that say “share the road”?

The rules of the road are pretty simple, it’s not hard to follow them.

Unfortunate story. I hope the cyclist will be okay. Hopefully this will serve as a reminder to other cyclists that they are NOT cars and therefore do not need to hug the white line when riding on the road.

Hopefully this will serve as a reminder to other motorists that you give cyclists 3feet when passing, and if you cant give them 3feet when passing, don’t pass till you can (this is more than common courtesy, its law)

Well said. Unfortunately, from most of the posts written on here, the majority or the drivers on the roads are ignorant of this! Wake up and open your eyes people!!

Unfortunately cyclists around here are more concerned with proving their point about sharing the road by getting as close as they can to the white line instead of their own safety! The bike lanes are at least 5 feet wide and yet the pedal bikers around here still insist on getting as close to moving traffic as possible! Hopefully these people will wake up and open THEIR eyes and realize that their little bikes are not cars!

J BONE: If there is a bike lane… you still have to “share the road” anyways. Thanks for pointing out that you have learned about this rule of the road. Hopefully you will remember the law the next time you see a cyclist hugging the white line on the edge of the road (regardless of amount of asphalt he / she has to negotiate).

I have full confidence that you have the skill set to comply. Just remember “If Your Not Sharing, Your Not Caring”.

          Peace Brother!

Just because you can ride on a road doesn’t always translate to you should. Use common sense.

  • Obama's gonna take our guns!!! April 23, 2014 at 9:37 am

liberals and their bicycles… should just move to Portland with the other fruitcakes…

WOW, how short minded and judgemental can you? I know they guy hit, who was training for the ironman while hit is one of the most conservative people I know. Not everything in life has to do with politics, but based on your comments I hope you don’t own any guns because your comment shows the lack of reason and logic you possess and to own a gun you need to be rational and level headed unlike your comment makes you look.
