Red Storm whitewash CSU-Los Angeles to complete weekend sweep

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State University baseball team closed out its series with Cal-State Los Angeles with an impressive 11-0 shutout at Bruce Hurst Field Saturday. The impressive shutout completed a three-game sweep of the Golden Eagles.

dsulogocal_state_laGolden Eagles starting pitcher Ryan Keller took the loss but actually kept the Red Storm batters in check through five innings. He only allowed two runs on two hits, and heading in the bottom of the sixth, DSU’s lead was just 2-0.

CSULA’s Jordan Cavazos relieved Keller and promptly loaded the bases. Kevin Kline scored Dixie’s third run when Ty Johnson was hit by pitch. Dalton Gust then sacrificed to center field, scoring Blair. At the end of six, the Red Storm lead was 4-0.

Dixie’s Yuto Kata led off the bottom of the seventh with an inside-the-park home run to right center. Trey Kamachi followed with a single and, after stealing second, scored on an infield single by Kris Kaplan. Kaplan scored later in the inning on another infield single by Johnson. Dixie’s lead climbed to 7-0 after seven.

The Red Storm scored their final four runs in their last at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. Drew McLaughlin drew a walk, then advanced to second on a Kata single to the left side. Austin Bartleson then reached on a throwing error, loading the bases. Kline doubled to left, scoring McLaughlin and Kata. Bartleson then scored on a sacrifice by Blair. Donald Glover then singled in Kline for the final run of the game.

Kody Christoffersen gained the win, allowing three hits over five innings, advancing to 5-2 on the season. Keller dropped to 1-5.

Kata went 3 for 5 from the plate including a double and a home run. Kline also had two extra-base hits with two doubles.

The win elevates the Red Storm to 29-13 and will return to Pac West Conference play next week when they visit Point Loma University. The Golden Eagles fall to 14-26 on the season.
