Car Guys Care revving up for Toys for Tots Car Show

ST. GEORGE — It’s a day of cars, toys and Christmas spirit as a group known as Car Guys Care hosts a car show to benefit the local Toys for Tots program for the third year in St. George. The event will take place in the parking lot of Iceburg Drive In on Dec. 14, from 3-7 p.m.

The Toys for Tots car show  is presented by Southern Utah Mustang Owners Association, Desert Rodders of Southern Utah, Rods & Rebels Hot Rod Club, Color Country Corvettes, Southern Utah All-Gens Camaro Club, and Kiwanis Club of St. George.

Everybody with a car, truck or motorcycle is invited. With the street closed and 8 car clubs involved, Shane Dastrup, president of the Southern Utah Mustang Owners Association, said they are hoping to make the event into a street party. Helping kids in need to get toys while checking out a shiny, classic car is what makes this toy drive event so successful and fun.

It is asked that toys donated at the event remain unwrapped. All the toys donated at the car show will go to families throughout the community.

Toys for Tots

The Toys for Tots program was officially adopted by the Marine Corps in 1948. Since that time, more than 452 million toys have been distributed to more than 209 million needy children.

Members of the community drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes positioned in local businesses. Coordinators pick up these toys and store them in a warehouse where the toys are sorted by age and gender. At Christmas, Coordinators, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies well qualified to identify the needy children in the community, distribute the toys to those less fortunate children.

While Marine Corps Reserve coordinators organize, coordinate and manage the Toys for Tots campaign, the ultimate success depends on the support of the local community and the generosity of the people who donate toys.

All monentary donations submitted via the secure web site for the Washington County area stay in the area. These funds are utilized to purchase toys where shortfalls are noted.

I’ll be there if I can get the ’46 chev started. She’s a bit stubborn in this cold weather.
