WASHINGTON CITY — The Christmas season officially kicked off in Washington City Monday night with a variety of Christmas customs and holiday merriment. Hundreds of people showed up to to Veterans Park in Washington for a tree lighting ceremony.
Children from various elementary schools sang at the park, while free wagon rides transported visitors to the historic Covington Mansion, a pioneer home that Washington City recently purchased. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus welcomed children inside the Covington House which had been transformed into a magical Christmas palace.
Mayor Ken Neilson, who grew up in Washington, attended the celebration, a Washington tradition since before he became mayor. The city was glad to be able to do it another year, he said.
For those who missed it, Washington will be giving tours through the Covington Mansion every Monday night from 5-8 p.m. until Christmas. The Covington House is the oldest pioneer building still standing in Washington County and is located at 200 N. and 200 E.
