Red Storm Recap: Fall sports season hits full stride

ST. GEORGE — The fall season for Dixie State athletics sprang into action this past week. Below is a recap of the first week of action.

Football
Coach Scott Brumfield’s team fell on the road to Division I-FCS Idaho State Bengals this past Saturday, 40-14. Quarterback Griff Robles connected twice in the end zone with pre-season All American tight end Joe Don Duncan. Robles finished the day 23 for 38 passing for 242 yards. Duncan and Mitch Frei both caught seven passes. The team hopes to rebound at home against Azusa Pacific this Saturday at 6 p.m.

Volleyball
The Volleyball team split two matches with Northwest Nazarene. The Red Storm won the opener on Sept. 6 (31-29, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17). Senior Shannon Young led a balanced attack with 15 kills and 16 digs. Also performing well was freshman Hannah Harrah (12 kills, 11 digs), juniors Nicole Koehler (11 kills), Kendahl Weiland (10 kills, 11 digs) and sophomores Alex Anderson (28 digs) and Shelby Sorenson (55 assists).

dixiestateThe Crusaders rebounded the next day and beat the Red Storm in straight sets 25-18, 25-21, 25-21. The Crusaders jumped to early leads in each game. The Red Storm would fight back and get back into each game, only to falter at the end. Young again led the team with 15 kills. Anderson contributed 22 digs.

Coach Robyn Felder’s squad will be in Las Vegas for four matches this weekend, beginning with two matches on Friday at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. against Colorado Mesa University and Western New Mexico University. They follow up with matches Saturday at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. against Western Colorado State University and New Mexico Highlands University.

Mens’ Soccer
The team’s first two matches were cancelled (San Diego Christian) and postponed (Westminster College). Coach Danny Ortiz’s squad finally got on the field against Seattle Pacific on Sept. 10, losing 2-0 in a non-conference match-up. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Walters was able to keep the Falcons out of the net through the first half, but ceded a goal in the 65th minute to Falcon forward Sean Russell. Ten minutes later, Graham Reid headed in a rebound shot for the final score. Dixie State was led in shots by junior midfielder Erik Shallenberger. The team will head north for its next match-up against Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Ida., this Saturday at 1 p.m.

Women’s Soccer
Coach Kaycee Bingham made her debut as the women’s soccer coach against Montana State-Billings at home this past Saturday. The match ended in a scoreless tie after being called three minutes into the first overtime due to threatening weather. Junior Forward Jennifer Mason led the team with shots on goal (4). Sophomore goalkeeper Stacie Gubler recorded a shutout, turning away four Montana State shots on goal.

Cross Country
The Dixie State University men’s and women’s cross country teams, coached by Justin Decker, opened the season with a fifth- and second-place finish in the open division at the George Kyte Classic held at Buffalo Park by host school Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Nick Watson broke the men’s team record for this course with a 27:26 in his first collegiate race and the men’s combined time of 146:46 was also a team best. For the women, sophomore Brianna Moyle (6:22.2) helped propel the Red Storm squad with a seventh-place finish. Zach Smith (5:40.6) finished in 13th place for the men and Elizabeth Cook (6:34.0) crossed in 10th place for the women. The Red Storm will not compete again until September 28 when they run in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas.
