Pine View-Cedar: Two thrillers as CHS gets baseball win, PV grabs softball walk-off victory

region-9-baseball-2ST. GEORGE – Battling deep into the cool St. George evening, Cedar and Pine View staged an epic baseball battle with the Redmen coming away with a 4-3 12-inning thriller of a win.

Easton Weaver and Ryker Tom started the rally in the 12th and three runs scored for the Reds, who had been held to a single run the first 11 innings by starter Dakota Donovan and relievers Carter Milne and Kody Wilstead.

Donovan was spectacular, throwing eight innings and striking out 17 batters while allowing just one unearned run. He struck out every Cedar hitter at least once. But the Panthers couldn’t get the bats going after a first-inning sacrifice fly RBI by Donovan.

Cedar tied it on an unearned run in the fifth and the game stayed tied until the 12th. After Cedar knocked home the three-spot in the top of the inning, Pine View rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.

Kolton Harris got the win and Brock Englestead got the save for Cedar, which improved to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in region at the halfway point. The Redmen play host to Desert Hills Friday afternoon.

Pine View, 5-8 and 1-5, is home to face Snow Canyon Friday night.

Lady Panthers coach Randy Green has said Elaine Asaasa has natural strength and amazing power. That’s a good enough reason not to put runners on base ahead of her in a close game.

Asaasa jacked a 3-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift Pine View to the comeback victory. The Lady Reds had just put up five runs in the top of the seventh to turn a 6-3 deficit into an 8-6 advantage. But the Panthers managed to get two runners on for their powerful catcher and Asaasa nailed a walk-off bomb that ended the game.

“Both teams were swinging the bats well,” Green said. “Thanks goodness we have Elaine on our side.”

Keltee Shelley hit two homers herself for Pine View, which improved to 14-2 overall and 4-2 in region play. Kirsten Anderson got her 10th win of the year despite the sub-par outing. Pine View hosts first-place Snow Canyon Friday. The Lady Warriors beat PV 9-4 the first time around.

Cedar, which fell to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in region, plays at home against Desert Hills Friday.
