ST. GEORGE – The 2013 Hurricane Rotary Club Easter Car Show brought 225 unique vehicles to Hurricane Valley on Saturday.

Some were remodeled classics looking even better than they did when they were first driven off the showroom floor. Others weren’t even cars at all, but big rigs, trailers and tractors.

Show cars are often their owner’s pride and joy, with a great deal of time, money and effort put into keeping up their appearance. But one that went through a complete transformation hadn’t even met its owner yet.

Michael Carnell’s son, Cameron Carnell, just turned 16 years old and like many teenagers, wanted a car for his milestone birthday. The family casually strolled around the car show; little did Cameron know that his father had been working on a custom lowrider truck much like the ones he had been admiring just for him.

“I didn’t expect this,” Cameron said. “But I guess I got myself a new truck.”

Some of the car show entries hadn’t been repaired or remodeled yet, or are works-in-progress. Nicknamed “rat rods,” they are purposely left unfinished to give the look of a more accurate re-creation of the car from its era.

Russ Boyce, from St. George, restored an original 1942 teardrop trailer out of boredom, adding something to his trailer every day for over a year. “I worked on my truck for over five years and now I needed a new project,” Boyce said.

Like Boyce, some car owners just barely finished their show piece. But Scott Tesch and his company, Stitch Craft Upholstery, are getting started. On Saturday, Tesch showed off his Willys Jeep as is, before he repairs it. In a future show, he will enter it again and a member of the crowd will have the chance to win it fully restored. Tesch’s plan is to raise money for Dixie High School’s Junior ROTC program.

“It’s a great program and we want it to continue, (but) without the extra funds it isn’t going to happen,” he said.

Washington County residents can look forward to seeing Tesch, and his fellow car enthusiasts, next year.
